Emmy and Oscar winning filmmaker James Moll has spent the last ten years working with Steven Spielberg as a director and producer of documentary films and series.In 1999, Moll received an Academy Award for directing and editing “The Last Days.” The 90-minute feature documentary, filmed in five countries, chronicles the lives of five Hungarian Holocaust survivors. After a worldwide theatrical release, the film has been shown repeatedly on HBO and IFC.
Moll is currently working with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg on the production of an Untitled HBO Documentary to accompany a new dramatic mini-series about the Pacific Theater of WWII, as a follow-up to the acclaimed mini-series “Band of Brothers.” Other current projects include “Inheritance,” a feature documentary about the psychological legacy bequeathed by a prominent Nazi leader upon his daughter; “Burma Bridge,” which Moll directed for The History Channel about a WWII Air Corps bomb squadron; and two of the “One-Minute Movies” for NBC, produced by John Wells.
In 2003, Moll produced “Voices from the List,” a documentary about Oskar Schindler. The film was released on the “Schindler’s List” DVD in March of 2004.
In 2002, Moll directed and produced the feature-length documentary “Price for Peace,” which premiered prime-time on NBC, hosted by Tom Brokaw. Spielberg and the late author Stephen Ambrose served as executive producers. The film focuses on America’s involvement in the Pacific during WWII, and was released on DVD by DreamWorks in May 2004, as part of the “Saving Private Ryan” box set.
In 2001, Moll produced “Broken Silence,” a series of five foreign-language documentaries. The five critically acclaimed one-hour films premiered on Cinemax in the U.S. and on prime-time network television in Russia, Poland, Argentina, the Czech Republic and Hungary. The series will be released on DVD by Universal Home Video in April, 2004. Moll received a 2002 Christopher Award for his work on this five-part series.
In 1997, Moll received an Emmy Award and the prestigious Peabody Award for producing “Survivors of the Holocaust,” a two-hour documentary that aired on TBS and CNN International. Moll also produced the Edward R. Murrow Award winning A&E documentary “The Lost Children of Berlin.”
For VH1’s Fan Club series, Moll made a film about obsessive fans of singer Ricky Martin. Also for VH1, Moll directed and produced “Subway Rockers” about musicians in the subways of New York City. Other television credits include directing and producing various film packages for the Primetime Emmy Awards, and The World Stunt Awards , as well as directing/producing the comedy pilot “Beggy” for Big Ticket Television. Moll served as an editor and supervising producer on “The Unfinished Journey,” directed by Spielberg as a millennium special for the White House New Year’s telecast on ABC.
In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Moll established and operated The Shoah Foundation with Steven Spielberg for the purpose of videotaping Holocaust survivor testimonies around the world. The Foundation succeeded in videotaping over 50,000 testimonies, in 57 countries. Moll continues to serve the Shoah Foundation as a Founding Director.
Moll produced the interactive CD-ROM, “Survivors,” narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio and Winona Ryder. The CD-ROM was nominated for the CODIE Award, and is being distributed free to schools worldwide.
Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Moll established Allentown Productions, a film/video company, for which he wrote, produced and directed dozens of promotional, educational, and industrial films. Today, Allentown Productions is developing reality/documentary series and specials for television, as well as feature film projects. Moll is a member of the Director’s Guild of America, the Television Academy, the Motion Picture Academy, and serves on the Executive Committee of the Documentary Branch of the Motion Picture Academy.
